Here are some more simple things to help prevent computer internet nonsense.

for windows xp
1. if you have a high speed connection be sure to have an external router in between you and the world. less vulnerabilities. Change the default password if you can.
2. keep computer updated with windows updates
3. keep virus scan updated, and run a full scan every couple weeks.
4. except when installing updates or programs do not browse with administrator privelidges. make a new user, make them a "limited" user. Use this limited user for internet browsing.
5. boot to safe mode "f8" and put in a password for that hidden administrator account. Give it one you can remember, a hacker a world away will not likely guess anything you choose.
6. in internet explorer, tools, options, empty cookies, and temporary files occasionally.
7. if you have a high speed connection and are not using the internet, unplug.
